The New Blackberry Passport

Blackberry Passport

BlackBerry's still got some fight in it yet: The beleaguered phone manufacturer's latest smartphone is selling well enough to crow about, though it's nowhere near the numbers being dropped by Apple and Samsung. The company said 200,000 BlackBerry Passports have been sold since the phone's launch on Wednesday. The Passport was a risky device, with its square-ish form factor, touch-sensitive hard keyboard and lack of major carrier support — there was no guarantee it would be hit and a distinct possibility it could fail. Watch the video below:

But people seem to be lapping it up, and BlackBerry's fiercely loyal core users likely appreciate the innovative and unique design. The company is working on transforming itself into a profitable one with a new focus on software and services; its recently announced financials show it moving towards profitability, and a little success on the device front can only help. Its next launch should be the much-leaked BlackBerry classic, a more familiar shape that may appeal to less adventurous users.

China's First Smartphone

Taking a nod from an American TV program, the Chinese city of Chongqing has shaped a smartphone sidewalk lane, seemingly offering a path for those too engrossed in messaging and tweeting to watch where they're going. But the property manager says it's intended to be satirical - to remind people that it's hazardous to tweet while walking the street.

"There are lots of elderly people and children in our street, and walking with your cellphone may cause unnecessary collisions here," said Nong Cheng, the marketing official with Meixin Group, which manages the area in the city's entertainment zone. Meixin has marked a 50-meter stretch of pavement with two lanes: one that prohibits cellphone use next to one that allows pedestrians to use them - at their "own risk."

Nong said the idea came from a similar stretch of pavement in Washington D.C. created by National Geographic Television in July as part of a behavior experiment. She said that pedestrians were not taking the new lanes seriously, but that many were snapping pictures of the signs and sidewalk.

"Those using their cellphones of course have not heeded the markings on the pavement," she said. "They don't notice them."

Assassin's Creed Unity

Ubisoft will bundle up three games in the Assassin's Creed series for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC for October. Dubbed Assassin's Creed: The Americas Collection in North America and Assassin's Creed Birth of a New World - The American Saga in Europe, the bundle combines three games that are set in the western world: Assassin's Creed 3Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and Assassin's Creed Liberation HD.

The bundle will launch on October 3 in Europe and October 28 in North America. Two more games in the series will arrive just weeks later on November 11, as well. Assassin's Creed Rogue will arrive at that time for Xbox 360 and PS3 and Assassin's Creed Unity will launch for PS4, Xbox One and PC. The Americas Collection makes for a nice setup to Rogue, which Ubisoft said will bridge the gap between Assassin's Creed 3 and 4, explaining the game's lack of availability on next-gen consoles. Ubisoft did not provide a price for the bundle.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus: Apple's two latest smartphones go head to head

The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus

It's been a long time since Apple was under this much pressure to impress with a new iPhone. After last year's rather straightforward upgrade, the Cupertino company needed something special, and something to fight back against the moves being made by its rivals. The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are Apple's counter-punches, but how do they stack up against each other? And which one should you be spending your cash on?

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus: Design

The world's iPhones have got thinner and lighter since 2007 but this year Apple has really worked some iPad Air-style magic on the dimensions of its latest handsets. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is just 6.9mm thick (shaving another 10% off the already slim 7.6mm iPhone 5S) while the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus has a thickness of just 7.1mm.The differences over the 2013 batch of iPhones is noticeable, and Jony Ive's team have rounded the corners of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus to accentuate the slimness of these devices, as well as adding more premium metal to the mix.

And which one should you be spending your cash on?

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus: Screen

The screen is where we find the biggest gap between the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus - it's the main distinction between the models. The iPhone 6's display measures 4.7 inches corner-to-corner at a resolution of 1,334 x 750 pixels (or 326 pixels-per-inch). The 6 Plus ups this to 5.5 inches and a resolution of 1,920 x 1080 pixels (401ppi). These figures put the iPhone 5S firmly in the shade, with its 1,136 x 640 pixel, 326ppi display. All that means you get more pixels on the 6 Plus spread across a larger area. Website text will be bigger, movies can be viewed from further away, text will be sharper, and so on. It also makes the device harder to hold in just one hand, but the one-handed mode built into iOS 8 should be able to alleviate some of those problems. The weight of either the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6 Plus shouldn't be a problem, at least.
One extra benefit you get from the additional screen space on the iPhone 6 Plus is the ability to run apps in landscape mode, iPad-style - it's a bonus for anyone who wants more room to work with on their handset. If you use any serious productivity apps on the go then bear this in mind, though compatibility varies between apps.

iPhone 6 vs iPhone 6 Plus: Camera

Both of the new iPhone models feature the same camera lens technology. That means an 8-megapixel shooter (as with the iPhone 5S) but an improved f/2.2 aperture and processing algorithms, so your pictures are going to look better than ever in all conditions. Bear in mind that the iPhone 6 will be easier to handle with one hand when framing shots, but the iPhone 6 Plus will give you more viewfinder screen space to get your image lined up correctly.

New Apple Watch To Change The Game In Wearable-Tech

Apple iWatch

This week, the long-expected Apple smart watch became a reality when the tech pioneer uncover its entry into the growing wearable-tech field.

The Apple Watch, which comes in two sizes and three styles with multiple choices for colors and wristbands, was expected to stimulate a market that's been slow to catch on as smartwatches from competitors such as Sony, Samsung, LG and Pebble rolled out over the past two years. More than just a mini smartphone, the Apple Watch, which will hit the market early next year, bundles a ton of watch-specific features. It has a "crown" knob to control scrolling and zoom without having to touch the screen, silent pulse bulletin, a slate of health and fitness apps and compatibility with Apple's new Apple Pay app, which lets users scan and pay card-free at participating stores.

But there are also questions.

The company is still secretive on many of the device's spec, including memory, screen resolution and -- most crucially -- battery life. The exact differences between the low-, middle- and high-end watches are also still blurry.

The watch must be tethered to an iPhone -- some observers had hoped for a standalone device -- and its $350 price tag is more than many were expecting. So did the company do enough to make Apple Watch a breakthrough device that will shake up the gadget market the way its iPod, iPhone and iPad did? Many analysts said they think so. "The Apple Watch defines the category in ways that other competitors will now have to work furiously to catch up to," said James McQuivey, a tech analyst at Forrester Research. "In classic Apple style, the company has introduced a new interface -- the digital crown along with a tap and touch capable surface -- that will make Apple's watch experience significantly easier to use than anybody else's."

While many competitors have released a single smartwatch, sometimes in designs that have been panned for being bulky and unfashionable, Apple's trademark attention to design could make a difference, said Carolina Milanesi, chief researcher at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. That's true, she said, even if the features Apple showcased won't come close to making a smartphone unnecessary.

"I do think smartwatches are still a nice-to-have versus a must-have -- more a convenience than a necessity, which is why appealing more from a style perspective might win more users in the short term," she said.

Whether that pushes competitors in the same direction remains to be seen.
